Grade: Date: 17/01/2026
Subject: Business
Lesson Topic: the role of packaging in promotion
Learning Objective/s:
  • Describe how packaging functions as a promotional tool within the marketing mix.
  • Explain the core functions of packaging and their impact on consumer perception and purchase decisions.
  • Analyse how packaging integrates with other promotion methods such as advertising and sales promotions.
  • Evaluate key considerations when designing promotional packaging, including target market, cost and sustainability.
Materials Needed:
  • Projector and screen
  • PowerPoint presentation with packaging examples
  • Printed case studies (Coca‑Cola, Apple, Ben & Jerry’s, Dyson)
  • Sample product packages or images
  • Worksheet for group analysis
  • QR‑code scanner or smartphones for digital tag activity
Introduction:
Begin with a quick visual poll: show three different product packages and ask students which catches their eye first. Link this to prior knowledge of branding and the “silent salesman” concept. Explain that today they will uncover how packaging operates as a promotion tool and what success looks like – being able to identify its functions and how it works with other promotional tactics.
Lesson Structure:
  1. Do‑now (5'): Students write down one product whose packaging influences their buying decision.
  2. Mini‑lecture (10'): Overview of packaging as promotion, using slides and real‑world examples.
  3. Interactive table activity (12'): In pairs, analyse the provided table of packaging functions vs promotional impact; complete a short worksheet.
  4. Group discussion (8'): Share findings and connect packaging to advertising, sales promotion, PR, personal selling and direct marketing.
  5. Design challenge (15'): Teams create a mock‑up of promotional packaging for a chosen product, incorporating target‑market and sustainability considerations.
  6. Gallery walk & feedback (5'): Groups present their designs; peers give quick feedback using a checklist.
  7. Recap quiz (5'): Exit ticket – three‑question Kahoot to assess key concepts.
Conclusion:
Summarise that effective packaging not only protects a product but also communicates brand values and works hand‑in‑hand with other promotional tools. Use the exit‑ticket responses to confirm understanding, and assign homework to research a recent packaging redesign and write a brief analysis of its promotional impact.
