Grade: Date: 17/01/2026
Subject: Business
Lesson Topic: the objectives of businesses in the private sector, public sector and social enterprises
Learning Objective/s:
  • Describe the primary and secondary objectives of private, public and social‑enterprise organisations.
  • Compare how performance measures align with the objectives of each sector.
  • Analyse case‑study examples to illustrate sector‑specific goals.
  • Evaluate the influence of corporate social responsibility and social impact on business objectives.
Materials Needed:
  • Projector and screen
  • Whiteboard and markers
  • Printed handouts of the sector‑objective table
  • Case‑study worksheets (Apple, NHS, The Big Issue)
  • Venn‑diagram poster for the three sectors
  • Student notebooks or laptops
Introduction:
Imagine running a company where profit isn’t the only goal – how would decisions change? Build on students’ prior knowledge of profit‑driven firms and ask them to predict what might drive a public agency or a social enterprise. Success will be measured by students’ ability to list sector objectives, compare them, and apply the concepts to real‑world examples.
Lesson Structure:
  1. Do‑now (5'): Quick quiz on business sectors – students write one objective they think each sector pursues.
  2. Mini‑lecture (10'): Define private, public and social enterprises; present primary/secondary objectives using the handout.
  3. Table analysis (15'): In groups, compare the objective tables, highlight similarities and differences; teacher circulates with probing questions.
  4. Case‑study investigation (15'): Each group analyses one case (Apple, NHS, The Big Issue) and matches objectives to performance measures.
  5. Whole‑class synthesis (10'): Groups share findings; construct a Venn diagram on the board illustrating overlapping objectives.
  6. Exit ticket (5'): Students write one key difference between private and social‑enterprise objectives and one question they still have.
Conclusion:
We recap that private firms focus on profit, public bodies on service and equity, and social enterprises balance impact with financial sustainability. The exit ticket responses will inform any misconceptions to address later. For homework, students read the suggested articles and prepare a short reflection on how performance measurement differs across the three sectors.
