Lesson Plan
Grade: Date: 18/01/2026
Subject: Business
Lesson Topic: the role of managers, including the contributions of Fayol and Mintzberg
Learning Objective/s:
  • Describe the core functions of management (planning, organising, leading, controlling).
  • Explain Fayol’s five functions and at least three of his key principles.
  • Identify Mintzberg’s three role categories and give an example of a role from each.
  • Compare how Fayol’s functions and Mintzberg’s roles complement each other in managerial practice.
  • Apply the concepts to a short case study by matching managerial activities to appropriate functions and roles.
Materials Needed:
  • Projector and screen
  • Whiteboard and markers
  • Printed handouts of Fayol’s principles table
  • Mintzberg roles summary sheet
  • Case‑study worksheet
  • Sticky notes for group activity
Introduction:

Begin with a quick poll: “Who is a manager you admire and why?” Connect this to students’ prior knowledge of basic management functions. Explain that by the end of the lesson they will be able to list and link the classic functions of Fayol with the practical roles identified by Mintzberg.

Lesson Structure:
  1. Do‑now (5'): Students write on sticky notes one daily task a manager performs; share examples.
  2. Mini‑lecture (10'): Review core management functions and introduce Fayol’s five functions and three key principles (Unity of Command, Division of Work, Authority & Responsibility).
  3. Group activity (10'): In small groups, analyse a short case study and match actions to Fayol’s principles; record on worksheet.
  4. Interactive presentation (10'): Explain Mintzberg’s three role categories; students role‑play one interpersonal, one informational, and one decisional role.
  5. Comparison discussion (10'): Whole‑class dialogue on how the roles support the functions; create a Venn diagram on the board.
  6. Exit ticket (5'): Write one way a manager can use both Fayol’s principles and Mintzberg’s roles to improve performance.
Conclusion:

Summarise the link between Fayol’s structural framework and Mintzberg’s day‑to‑day roles, highlighting the complementary nature of theory and practice. Collect exit tickets as a quick check for understanding. For homework, ask students to observe a manager in their community and write a brief report linking observed behaviours to at least two Fayol principles and two Mintzberg roles.
