Lesson Topic: the management and control of strategic change
Learning Objective/s:
  • Describe the reasons why strategic change is required in organisations.
  • Explain the six‑stage strategic planning process and the role of key analytical tools.
  • Apply corporate planning techniques to translate strategic objectives into actionable plans.
  • Evaluate and select appropriate control mechanisms to monitor strategic implementation.
  • Analyse performance data to manage and adapt strategic change.
Materials Needed:

  • Whiteboard and markers
  • Printed handouts of PESTEL, SWOT, Porter’s Five Forces, Ansoff and BCG matrices
  • Case‑study worksheets
  • Laptops/computers for research
  • Assessment rubric / exit‑ticket slips
Introduction:

Begin with a short video clip showing a company that failed to adapt to market changes, prompting discussion about strategic change. Recall students' prior work on SWOT and PESTEL analyses, linking these tools to today’s focus. Explain that by the end of the lesson they will be able to map the full strategic change cycle from analysis to control.

Lesson Structure:
  1. Do‑now (5’) – Quick exit‑ticket on previous SWOT strengths/weaknesses.
  2. Mini‑lecture (10’) – Overview of why strategic change is needed and the six‑stage planning process.
  3. Interactive activity (15’) – Groups analyse a brief case using PESTEL and Porter’s Five Forces, then generate strategic options.
  4. Planning workshop (15’) – Groups develop a concise corporate plan (objectives, resources, timeline) for one option.
  5. Control mechanisms discussion (10’) – Teacher demonstrates strategic, management, financial, and operational controls; students match tools to plan elements.
  6. Whole‑class debrief & reflection (5’) – Teams present their plan, receive peer feedback, and summarise key control steps.
Conclusion:

Summarise the strategic change cycle, highlighting how analysis, planning, implementation, and control interlink. Ask students to write one key takeaway on an exit ticket. Assign homework to complete a full strategic plan for a chosen business using the provided template.
