Grade: Date: 17/01/2026
Subject: Business
Lesson Topic: the relationship between delegation and accountability
Learning Objective/s:
  • Describe the link between delegation and accountability in various organisational structures.
  • Explain the step‑by‑step delegation process and the associated accountability at each stage.
  • Compare how functional, divisional, matrix and flat structures affect delegation and accountability.
  • Evaluate common delegation pitfalls and propose strategies to ensure effective accountability.
Materials Needed:
  • Projector or interactive whiteboard
  • Slide deck summarising key concepts
  • Handout with delegation process table and structure comparison
  • Case study worksheet for group analysis
  • Markers and flip chart for brainstorming
  • Exit‑ticket cards
Introduction:

Start with a quick poll: ask students to write on a sticky note a recent task they delegated and the outcome. Briefly recap prior knowledge of authority and responsibility, then state that today they will uncover how delegation and accountability interact across organisational forms. Success will be measured by their ability to map delegation steps and identify accountability links.

Lesson Structure:
  1. Do‑now (5') – students post their delegation poll responses and share one example.
  2. Mini‑lecture (10') – present definitions of delegation and accountability and illustrate their inter‑dependence.
  3. Guided practice (12') – walk through the six‑step delegation process; students complete a delegation sheet showing who holds accountability at each step.
  4. Group activity (15') – analyse a short case study, identify the organisational structure, map delegation patterns, and present findings.
  5. Pitfalls discussion (8') – whole‑class brainstorm of over‑/under‑delegation and unclear authority, linking each to accountability issues.
  6. Summary & exit ticket (5') – recap key points; students write one takeaway and one lingering question on an exit‑ticket card.
Conclusion:

Review how clear delegation creates a shared accountability framework regardless of structure. Ask a few students to share their exit‑ticket responses to reinforce learning. Assign homework: read a provided article on delegation in matrix organisations and prepare a brief reflection on how accountability can be maintained.
