Introduction:
Begin with a quick poll: “What makes a business succeed?” Capture student ideas on the board, then link them to internal capabilities and the external environment. Explain that by the end of the lesson they will be able to analyse real cases and identify actionable success or failure factors.
Lesson Structure:
  1. Do‑now (5’) – Students list three successful and three failed businesses; share briefly (checks prior knowledge).
  2. Mini‑lecture (10’) – Present key success factors and common failure reasons using slides.
  3. Case study group work (15’) – Small groups analyse TechCo Ltd and FashionFast handouts, completing VRIO and PESTLE tables on worksheets.
  4. Gallery walk & discussion (8’) – Groups display findings; class discusses patterns and links to internal/external factors.
  5. Teacher‑led synthesis (5’) – Summarise the analytical framework and highlight crucial financial indicators.
  6. Exit ticket (2’) – Students write one strategic recommendation to prevent failure for a chosen business.
Conclusion:
Recap the main factors that drive success and cause failure, emphasizing the systematic analysis tools introduced. Collect exit tickets as a quick retrieval check. Assign homework to research a local business and prepare a brief report applying the VRIO and PESTLE models.
