Grade: Date: 17/01/2026
Subject: Business
Lesson Topic: the advantages and disadvantages that a multinational might bring to a country
Learning Objective/s:
  • Describe the key advantages that multinational enterprises bring to a host country, such as employment creation and technology transfer.
  • Explain the main disadvantages associated with MNEs, including profit repatriation and environmental impacts.
  • Analyse a case study to evaluate the net economic effect of an MNE on a host country.
  • Compare how MNEs influence competition and the performance of local firms.
  • Apply knowledge to answer exam‑style questions on the topic.
Materials Needed:
  • Projector and screen
  • Whiteboard and markers
  • Printed case‑study handout (automotive MNE)
  • Worksheet with pros/cons table
  • Student laptops/tablets for quick research
  • Sticky notes for exit tickets
Introduction:
Imagine a new car factory opening in a town like yours – jobs appear, but local shops worry about competition. Students will recall what they already know about foreign direct investment and its role in the economy. By the end of the lesson they will be able to list and evaluate both the benefits and drawbacks that a multinational can bring to a host country.
Lesson Structure:
  1. Do‑now (5') – Students write down any multinational companies they know and discuss one perceived benefit.
  2. Mini‑lecture (10') – Define MNE, host country, and FDI; present the main advantages using slides.
  3. Group activity (15') – In small groups analyse the automotive case study, completing a pros/cons table on the worksheet.
  4. Whole‑class discussion (10') – Groups share findings; teacher highlights key points and adds missing disadvantages.
  5. Exam question practice (10') – Students answer one of the provided exam‑style questions, then peer‑check.
  6. Summary & exit ticket (5') – Quick recap; each student writes one advantage and one disadvantage on a sticky note and hands it in.
Conclusion:
We reviewed how multinationals can boost employment, technology and exports while also posing risks such as profit outflows and environmental damage. The exit tickets will give a snapshot of student understanding, and for homework students will research a local multinational and prepare a brief report on its impact. This reinforces today’s analysis and prepares them for upcoming exam questions.
