Grade: Date: 25/02/2026
Subject: Business
Lesson Topic: the main features of different types of business ownership: sole traders, partnerships, private limited companies, public limited companies, franchises, co‑operatives, joint ventures and social enterprises
Learning Objective/s:
  • Describe the key characteristics (legal status, liability, funding, management control) of each ownership type.
  • Compare the advantages and disadvantages of the eight forms of business ownership.
  • Evaluate which ownership structure best fits a given business scenario.
Materials Needed:
  • Projector and laptop with presentation slides
  • Whiteboard and markers
  • Printed comparison handout
  • Case‑study worksheets
  • Sticky notes for exit tickets
Introduction:
Begin with a quick poll of local businesses students see and guess their ownership type. Review prior knowledge of sole traders and partnerships, then explain that today they will explore all major ownership forms and learn to match a structure to a business need. Success criteria: students will identify key features and justify the most appropriate ownership type for a scenario.
Lesson Structure:
  1. Do‑now (5') – List three local businesses and suggest their ownership type.
  2. Mini‑lecture (15') – Slide presentation covering each ownership type’s legal status, liability, funding options and control.
  3. Guided comparison activity (15') – In pairs fill a comparison chart using the handout.
  4. Case‑study analysis (20') – Groups receive a business scenario, decide on an ownership form and justify their choice.
  5. Whole‑class debrief (10') – Groups share decisions; teacher clarifies misconceptions.
  6. Exit ticket (5') – Write one advantage and one disadvantage of the chosen ownership type.
Conclusion:
Recap the main features of each ownership form and how they align with liability, funding and control needs. Collect exit tickets as a retrieval check and assign homework: research a real company and identify its ownership structure, explaining why it suits that business.
