Lesson Plan
Grade: Date: 25/02/2026
Subject: Business
Lesson Topic: the purpose and attributes of an organisational structure such as flexibility, meeting the needs of the business, allowing for growth and development and encouraging intrapreneurship
Learning Objective/s:
  • Describe the purpose of organisational structures in meeting business needs.
  • Explain key attributes such as flexibility, scalability, fit‑for‑purpose and intrapreneurial support.
  • Analyse how different structural forms align with specific business objectives.
  • Evaluate ways to design structures that foster intrapreneurship.
Materials Needed:
  • Projector and screen
  • Whiteboard and markers
  • Printed case‑study handout (Company X)
  • Worksheet with matching activity (structure ↔ objective)
  • Sticky notes for team brainstorming
  • Laptop with presentation slides
Introduction:

Begin with a brief video clip showing how rapid market changes force companies to rethink their structures – a hook that highlights the need for flexibility. Ask students to recall the main types of organisational structures they have studied and how these affect decision‑making. Explain that by the end of the lesson they will be able to identify, compare and justify structures that support growth and intrapreneurship.

Lesson Structure:
  1. Do‑now (5'): Quick recall quiz on common organisational structures.
  2. Mini‑lecture (10'): Present the purpose and key attributes (flexibility, fit‑for‑purpose, scalability, intrapreneurial environment) using slides.
  3. Matching activity (10'): In pairs, match business objectives to the most suitable structural feature on a worksheet.
  4. Case‑study analysis (15'): Small groups examine the Company X transition, answer guided questions, and create a brief poster of outcomes.
  5. Whole‑class debrief (5'): Groups share findings; teacher synthesises the link between structure, strategy and innovation.
Conclusion:

Summarise how an effective organisational structure aligns with strategic goals and encourages intrapreneurship. Students complete an exit ticket by writing one way they could redesign a familiar business’s structure to improve flexibility. For homework, ask them to research a real company’s current structure and prepare a short paragraph on how it supports (or hinders) growth and innovation.
