Lesson Topic: Know and understand characteristics, uses, advantages and disadvantages of Automatic Teller Machines (ATM) including withdrawing cash, depositing cash or cheques, checking account balance, mini statements, bill paying, money transfers
Learning Objective/s:
  • Describe the key characteristics and components of an ATM.
  • Explain the main functions (withdrawal, deposit, balance check, mini‑statement, bill payment, money transfer) and how they are performed.
  • Compare the advantages and disadvantages of ATM use for customers and banks.
  • Evaluate security features and identify potential risks associated with ATM transactions.
  • Demonstrate how to complete a typical ATM transaction safely and accurately.
Materials Needed:
  • Projector and screen
  • Computer with presentation slides
  • Printed handout of ATM component diagram
  • Dummy ATM card and PIN cards

 Introduction:
Begin with a short video showing an ATM in action to capture interest. Ask learners to share any personal experiences using an ATM and list the services they have used. Explain that today they will explore how ATMs work, their benefits and limitations, and the security measures built in. Success will be measured by their ability to describe the transaction flow and evaluate pros and cons.

  2. Teacher input (10') – Present slides on ATM architecture and key characteristics; label components on a diagram.
  3. Guided practice (12') – Demonstrate a cash withdrawal using a simulated ATM interface; students follow the steps on their worksheet.
  4. Group activity (15') – Small groups create a T‑chart comparing advantages vs. disadvantages using the summary table.
  5. Security focus (8') – Discuss PIN encryption, anti‑skimming, CCTV; students identify three security features on a dummy card.
  6. Consolidation quiz (5') – Kahoot/quick quiz covering functions, advantages, and risks.

Conclusion:
