Lesson Plan
Grade: Date: 17/01/2026
Subject: Economics
Lesson Topic: effects of aid
Learning Objective/s:
  • Describe the main types of aid and their distinguishing features.
  • Explain the intended economic effects of aid on growth, poverty, fiscal balance and institutions.
  • Analyse the conditions that improve aid effectiveness and recognise common negative outcomes.
  • Evaluate real‑world examples of aid impact using both quantitative and qualitative indicators.
Materials Needed:
  • Projector and screen
  • PowerPoint slides on aid types and effects
  • Handout containing the positive/negative outcomes table
  • Whiteboard and markers
  • Calculators for simple multiplier calculations
  • Case‑study worksheet with an illustrative aid‑flow diagram
Introduction:

Begin with a quick poll: “What examples of international aid have you heard about recently?” Connect these examples to students’ prior knowledge of trade and development. Explain that by the end of the lesson they will be able to identify different aid types, predict their economic effects, and assess why aid sometimes succeeds or fails.

Lesson Structure:
  1. Do‑now (5’) – Students list recent aid headlines on sticky notes and share briefly.
  2. Mini‑lecture (10’) – Define aid, present the five main types with slide visuals.
  3. Guided analysis (12’) – Examine the positive/negative outcomes table; pairs discuss which outcomes they find most plausible.
  4. Conditions for effectiveness (8’) – Small groups match each condition (policy, capacity, ownership, coordination, transparency) to a real‑world scenario.
  5. Case‑study activity (10’) – Using the aid‑flow diagram, calculate a simple income multiplier and discuss potential spill‑over effects.
  6. Check for understanding (5’) – Kahoot quiz covering definitions, effects, and effectiveness conditions.
Conclusion:

Summarise how aid can boost income and human capital but may also create dependency or distort incentives. Ask each student to write one “key takeaway” on an exit ticket and submit it before leaving. For homework, assign a short reflective paragraph evaluating a recent aid program of their choice using the effectiveness criteria discussed.
