Lesson Plan
Grade: Date: 25/02/2026
Subject: Biology
Lesson Topic: Describe the characteristics of living organisms by describing: movement, respiration, sensitivity, growth, reproduction, excretion, nutrition.
Learning Objective/s:
  • Describe the seven characteristics of living organisms and give relevant examples.
  • Explain how each characteristic contributes to an organism’s survival and reproduction.
  • Compare autotrophic and heterotrophic nutrition and illustrate their roles.
  • Analyse simple diagrams to identify characteristics in plants and animals.
  • Apply knowledge by classifying organisms based on observed traits.
Materials Needed:
  • Projector and screen
  • Printed handouts with the summary table
  • Diagram cards of various organisms
  • Worksheet for group activity
  • Markers and sticky notes
  • Interactive quiz platform (e.g., Kahoot)
Introduction:

Begin with a short video of a plant bending toward light to hook interest. Review students’ prior knowledge of cell structure and basic energy concepts. State that by the end of the lesson they will be able to list and explain each characteristic of living organisms.

Lesson Structure:
  1. Do‑now (5'): Quick quiz on previously covered cell functions.
  2. Mini‑lecture with slides (15'): Overview of the seven characteristics, using the suggested flowchart diagram.
  3. Group activity (15'): Teams receive organism cards and identify which characteristics are displayed, recording answers on the worksheet.
  4. Whole‑class discussion (10'): Groups share findings; teacher clarifies misconceptions.
  5. Interactive quiz (10'): Kahoot game to reinforce definitions and examples.
  6. Summary & exit ticket (5'): Students write one characteristic with an example on a sticky note and hand it in.
Conclusion:

Recap the seven characteristics, highlighting how they interrelate to sustain life. Collect exit tickets as a retrieval check and assign a short homework: create a poster that illustrates any two characteristics in a chosen organism.
