Lesson Plan
Grade: Date: 25/02/2026
Subject: Biology
Lesson Topic: State the word equation for photosynthesis: carbon dioxide + water → glucose + oxygen (in the presence of light and chlorophyll).
Learning Objective/s:
  • State the correct word equation for photosynthesis.
  • Explain the role of carbon dioxide, water, glucose and oxygen in the process.
  • Identify the two main stages of photosynthesis and where they occur in the leaf.
  • Describe at least three environmental factors that influence the rate of photosynthesis.
Materials Needed:
  • Projector or interactive whiteboard
  • Printed worksheet with word equation and leaf diagram
  • Blank leaf diagram handouts for labeling
  • Markers and whiteboard
  • Quiz cards for quick revision
  • Laptop with presentation slides
Introduction:

Show a short video clip of a sunny leaf to capture interest. Ask students what they already know about how plants make their own food, linking to previous lessons on plant cells. Explain that by the end of the lesson they will be able to write the correct word equation for photosynthesis and name its key stages.

Lesson Structure:
  1. Do‑now (5’) – students complete a quick checklist on basic photosynthesis concepts.
  2. Mini‑lecture (10’) – present the word equation, reactants, products, and location in the leaf using a labelled diagram.
  3. Guided activity (12’) – groups label a blank leaf diagram and discuss the light‑dependent reactions and the Calvin‑Benson cycle.
  4. Concept check (8’) – teacher asks targeted questions; students respond with clickers or show of hands.
  5. Factors investigation (10’) – short demonstration or simulation of light intensity and CO₂ levels; students record observations.
  6. Summary quiz (5’) – exit ticket: write the word equation and list one factor that influences the rate of photosynthesis.
Conclusion:

Recap the word equation and emphasise the importance of light, water and carbon dioxide. Collect exit tickets where students state one factor that could speed up photosynthesis. For homework, ask students to draw and label a cross‑section of a leaf showing the flow of CO₂, H₂O, glucose and O₂.
