Grade: Date: 25/02/2026
Subject: Business Studies
Lesson Topic: financial methods of motivation, e.g. time-based, piece-rate, salary, bonus, commission, profit sharing, fringe benefits
Learning Objective/s:
  • Describe at least five financial methods of employee motivation and their key features.
  • Compare the advantages and disadvantages of each method and select appropriate methods for different business contexts.
  • Calculate simple examples of piece‑rate, bonus, commission and profit‑sharing payments.
  • Evaluate how combining financial methods can improve motivation while maintaining fairness.
Materials Needed:
  • Projector and screen
  • Whiteboard and markers
  • Printed handouts with summary table of methods
  • Calculator worksheets for payment calculations
  • Example case‑study cards
  • Sticky notes for group brainstorming
Introduction:
Begin with a quick poll: “If you could choose any way to be paid for work, what would you prefer and why?” This activates prior knowledge of pay structures and highlights personal motivations. Explain that today’s lesson will explore the range of financial motivation methods and the success criteria: students will be able to describe, compare, and calculate each method.
Lesson Structure:
  1. Do‑now (5’) – poll results and brief whole‑class discussion.
  2. Direct instruction (15’) – slide presentation covering each financial method and the comparison table.
  3. Guided practice (10’) – pairs calculate piece‑rate and commission examples using worksheets.
  4. Case‑study activity (15’) – groups analyse a small‑business scenario and decide which combination of methods best fits, recording rationale on sticky notes.
  5. Whole‑class debrief (10’) – groups present choices; teacher highlights key advantages/disadvantages and links to fairness.
  6. Check for understanding (5’) – quick quiz/exit ticket with three scenario questions.
Conclusion:
Summarise that effective financial motivation links effort to reward and that the choice of method depends on job type, organisational goals and fairness. For the exit ticket, ask each student to write one method they would recommend for a retail store and why. Assign homework: research a real company’s remuneration package and prepare a short paragraph describing the mix of financial incentives used.
