Lesson Plan

Lesson Plan
Grade: Date: 18/01/2026
Subject: Design and Technology
Lesson Topic: Decoration and enhancement: printing, dyeing, embroidery, appliqué
Learning Objective/s:
  • Describe the four main decorative techniques (printing, dyeing, embroidery, appliqué) and their typical applications.
  • Explain the key process steps and safety considerations for each technique.
  • Compare the advantages and limitations of each method to select the most suitable technique for a design brief.
  • Produce a simple prototype using one technique and evaluate its colour, texture and durability.
Materials Needed:
  • Projector and screen
  • Printed handouts summarising each technique
  • Fabric swatches (cotton, linen, polyester)
  • Printing supplies – blocks, screen, ink
  • Dyeing supplies – dye packets, gloves, goggles, basin
  • Embroidery supplies – needles, thread (cotton, silk, metallic), hoops
  • Appliqué supplies – scissors, pins, fabric pieces, sewing machine (optional)
  • Worksheet & assessment checklist
Introduction:

“Imagine turning a plain T‑shirt into a vibrant piece of art.” This hook connects to students’ everyday experience with customised clothing. Review prior knowledge of basic fabric properties and ask students to recall any decorative techniques they have seen. Explain that by the end of the lesson they will be able to identify, compare and apply the four key techniques.

Lesson Structure:
  1. Do‑now (5') – Quick sketch: students draw a simple garment and note one decorative idea.
  2. Mini‑lecture (10') – Overview of printing, dyeing, embroidery, appliqué with visual examples.
  3. Demonstration – Printing (10') – Show block printing set‑up, discuss preparation and fixing.
  4. Group activity – Dyeing (10') – Students prepare a small dye bath, colour a fabric swatch, observe safety steps.
  5. Demonstration – Embroidery (10') – Show basic stitches and hoop use; students try a running stitch.
  6. Hands‑on – Appliqué (10') – Cut and pin a simple shape, stitch around edges.
  7. Comparative discussion (5') – Students list advantages/disadvantages of each technique on a shared chart.
  8. Exit ticket (5') – Write which technique they would choose for a given design brief and why.
Conclusion:

Summarise the key characteristics of each decorative method and highlight how the choice depends on design intent, fabric type and production scale. Collect exit tickets as a retrieval check and assign homework: research a contemporary fashion or home‑textile product that uses one of the techniques and prepare a short presentation for the next class.
