Lesson Plan
Grade: Date: 17/01/2026
Subject: Geography
Lesson Topic: 3.5 Energy: Describe different sources and factors affecting energy supply and demand.
Learning Objective/s:
  • Describe the main non‑renewable and renewable energy sources and their typical uses.
  • Explain the key factors that influence energy supply.
  • Analyse the factors that affect energy demand.
  • Evaluate how interactions between supply and demand shape economic development.
  • Compare the advantages and disadvantages of different energy sources.
Materials Needed:
  • Projector and screen
  • PowerPoint slides with energy source table
  • Printed handouts of the source‑type table
  • Worksheet containing case‑study scenarios
  • Whiteboard and markers
  • Short video clips of renewable technologies
  • Calculators (optional)
Introduction:
Ask students to imagine a day without electricity to spark curiosity. Review prior learning on economic development and resource distribution. Explain that today they will identify energy sources and the factors that drive supply and demand, and will be assessed on their ability to explain these concepts.
Lesson Structure:
  1. Do‑now (5'): Quick brainstorm – list everyday activities that need energy.
  2. Mini‑lecture (15'): Present main energy sources (slides & handout) and discuss advantages/disadvantages.
  3. Group activity (15'): Examine supply‑factor cards; each group identifies how a factor influences a specific source.
  4. Interactive discussion (10'): Explore demand‑factor cards and link them to population, income, and urbanisation.
  5. Scenario analysis (15'): Teams evaluate three scenarios (urbanisation, carbon tax, battery breakthrough) and predict supply‑demand outcomes.
  6. Plenary (5'): Recap key points; exit ticket – write one supply and one demand factor for a chosen energy source.
Conclusion:
Summarise the main energy sources and the principal supply and demand drivers discussed. Collect exit tickets to gauge understanding, and assign a short homework: research a local energy project and identify the supply and demand factors influencing it.
