Lesson Plan
Grade: Date: 17/01/2026
Subject: Business Studies
Lesson Topic: internal and external communication
Learning Objective/s:
  • Describe how internal communication links employees, processes and objectives.
  • Explain the purposes and benefits of external communication with stakeholders.
  • Identify common barriers to effective communication and propose strategies to overcome them.
  • Analyse the impact of effective communication on decision‑making and organisational performance.
Materials Needed:
  • Projector or interactive whiteboard
  • Slide presentation on communication concepts
  • Handout with comparison table of internal vs external communication
  • Case study worksheets
  • Markers and flip chart
  • Short video clip illustrating communication barriers
Introduction:

Begin with a quick poll: ask students to think of a recent miscommunication they experienced at work or school. Link this to the idea that communication is the lifeblood of any business and that both internal and external messages shape performance. Explain that by the end of the lesson they will be able to describe key purposes, spot barriers and suggest practical ways to improve communication.

Lesson Structure:
  1. Do‑now (5’) – students write a brief example of a miscommunication and share; teacher records common themes.
  2. Mini‑lecture (10’) – present definitions of internal and external communication, using slides and the comparison table.
  3. Group activity (12’) – teams analyse a case study, fill a Venn diagram of benefits and barriers for each communication type.
  4. Whole‑class debrief (8’) – groups report findings; teacher highlights key points and clarifies misconceptions.
  5. Strategies workshop (10’) – students brainstorm ways to overcome identified barriers and create a quick poster of best‑practice tips.
  6. Exit ticket (5’) – each learner writes one actionable communication improvement they will apply in a real‑world context.
Conclusion:

Summarise that effective communication links people, processes and objectives, boosting efficiency and reputation both inside and outside the firm. Ask students to submit their exit tickets, which serve as a retrieval check. Assign homework to observe and record a real business communication example for the next lesson.
