Grade: Date: 17/01/2026
Subject: Economics
Lesson Topic: Consequences of unemployment for the individual, producers/firms, the government and the economy
Learning Objective/s:
  • Describe how unemployment impacts individuals, firms, government and the overall economy.
  • Analyse short‑run and long‑run consequences of unemployment for each stakeholder.
  • Evaluate policy measures that can mitigate these consequences.
Materials Needed:
  • Projector and screen
  • Whiteboard and markers
  • Printed handout of the summary table of consequences
  • AD‑AS diagram slides
  • Student worksheets with stakeholder case study
  • Exit‑ticket cards
Introduction:

Begin with the question, “What would your daily life look like if you suddenly lost your job?” Connect this to students’ prior knowledge of unemployment definitions and rates. Explain that by the end of the lesson they will be able to list and explain the consequences for each major stakeholder and suggest one policy response.

Lesson Structure:
  1. Do‑now (5') – Quick quiz on unemployment definitions and calculation of the unemployment rate.
  2. Mini‑lecture (10') – Present the four stakeholder groups and key short‑run/long‑run effects using the summary table and AD‑AS diagram.
  3. Group analysis (15') – Students split into four groups (Individual, Firm, Government, Economy). Each creates a mind‑map of short‑term and long‑term consequences for their assigned stakeholder.
  4. Whole‑class share (10') – Groups present their mind‑maps; teacher synthesises links between stakeholders and macro‑economic outcomes.
  5. Policy brainstorm (5') – Class generates one policy idea to address a major consequence for each stakeholder.
  6. Check for understanding (5') – Exit ticket: “State one short‑term and one long‑term effect of unemployment on the government.”
Conclusion:

Recap the four sets of consequences and highlight how they interrelate within the AD‑AS framework. Collect exit tickets to gauge understanding, and assign homework: complete a worksheet analysing a real‑world unemployment case and propose a suitable policy response.
