  • Worksheet containing practice questions
  • Calculators or spreadsheet software
  • Whiteboard and markers
  • Printed handout of summary notes
Introduction:

Start with a quick poll: “Which brands dominate the smartphone market you use?” to activate prior knowledge of competition. Explain that today students will learn how to quantify that dominance using market share. They will master the formula, practice calculations, and interpret what changes mean. Success will be measured by accurate percentage calculations and clear explanations of implications.

Lesson Structure:
  1. Do‑Now (5’) – Students list three companies they think lead a market and discuss why.
  2. Mini‑lecture (10’) – Present definition, formula, and step‑by‑step worked example (Company A).
  3. Guided practice (12’) – Teacher models calculation for Practice Question 1; students complete it on their worksheet.
  4. Pair work (10’) – Students solve Questions 2 and 3, then compare answers.
  5. Discussion (8’) – Review interpreting rising/falling market share and the factors that influence change.
  6. Consolidation (5’) – Exit‑ticket quiz: each student writes one key point learned and one lingering question.
Conclusion:

Recap that market share is a percentage showing a company’s position and that changes signal growth, decline, or stability. Remind students of the formula and the need for consistent units. For the exit ticket, students submit a one‑sentence summary of today’s learning. Homework: complete an additional set of market‑share calculations from a provided data sheet.
