Grade: Date: 25/02/2026
Subject: Business Studies
Lesson Topic: advantages and disadvantages of part-time employees and full-time employees
Learning Objective/s:
  • Describe the main advantages and disadvantages of part‑time and full‑time employees within a simple organisational structure.
  • Compare how each employment type influences flexibility, cost, training, commitment and legal requirements.
  • Analyse business scenarios to determine which employment type is most appropriate.
  • Evaluate the overall impact of staffing choices on organisational efficiency.
Materials Needed:
  • Projector and screen
  • Whiteboard and markers
  • Printed copies of the advantages/disadvantages comparison table
  • Worksheet with case‑study scenarios
  • Sticky notes for group brainstorming
Introduction:

Start with a quick poll: “When does a business need flexible staffing?” Connect this to students’ prior knowledge of simple organisational structures. Explain that by the end of the lesson they will be able to identify, compare and justify the use of part‑time and full‑time staff, meeting the success criteria listed in the objectives.

Lesson Structure:
  1. Do‑now (5'): Students list known pros and cons of part‑time vs full‑time employment on sticky notes.
  2. Mini‑lecture (10'): Teacher presents the comparison table, highlighting each aspect (flexibility, cost, training, commitment, coverage, legal).
  3. Guided analysis (12'): In pairs, students work through a case‑study worksheet, completing a decision matrix to recommend staffing.
  4. Whole‑class discussion (8'): Groups share recommendations; teacher probes understanding and clarifies misconceptions.
  5. Formative quiz (5'): Quick Kahoot/MCQ check on key advantages and disadvantages.
  6. Exit ticket (5'): Students write one scenario where part‑time staff are preferable and one where full‑time staff are preferable.
Conclusion:

Summarise the key differences between part‑time and full‑time employees and how they affect a simple organisation’s performance. Collect the exit tickets as a retrieval check and assign homework: research a local business and note which employment type it uses and why.
