Grade: Date: 25/02/2026
Subject: Information Communication Technology ICT
Lesson Topic: Know and understand characteristics, uses, advantages and disadvantages of biometric recognition including face, iris, retina, finger, thumb, hand, voice
Learning Objective/s:
  • Describe the characteristics, uses, advantages and disadvantages of each biometric type (face, iris, retina, fingerprint, thumb, hand, voice).
  • Compare biometric methods in terms of accuracy, cost and suitability for different applications.
  • Evaluate the privacy and security implications of biometric systems.
  • Apply knowledge to select an appropriate biometric solution for a given scenario.
Materials Needed:
  • Projector or interactive whiteboard
  • Printed comparison‑chart handouts
  • Sample biometric images / short video clips
  • Worksheets for group activity
  • Laptops or tablets for quick research
  • Markers and flip‑chart paper
Introduction:
Imagine unlocking your phone or entering a secure building without typing a password. You already know about passwords and tokens, so today we will explore how our own bodies can be used for authentication. By the end of the lesson you will be able to explain, compare and recommend biometric solutions based on their strengths and limitations.
Lesson Structure:
  1. Do‑now (5') – Quick quiz on traditional authentication methods.
  2. Mini‑lecture (10') – Slides introducing the seven biometric types and key features.
  3. Group analysis (15') – Each group receives a handout on one biometric, fills a comparison table (characteristics, uses, pros, cons).
  4. Group presentations (10') – Teams share their findings with the class.
  5. Guided discussion (10') – Privacy, security and suitability; teacher synthesises key points.
  6. Exit ticket (5') – Write which biometric you would choose for school attendance and why.
Conclusion:
We revisited the main characteristics, advantages and disadvantages of each biometric and linked them to real‑world applications. The exit ticket checks understanding, and for homework you will research a real biometric system and write a short paragraph on its effectiveness and any privacy concerns.
