Grade: Date: 17/01/2026
Subject: Economics
Lesson Topic: The range of policies available to reduce unemployment and their effectiveness
Learning Objective/s:
  • Describe the main demand‑side and supply‑side policies used to reduce unemployment.
  • Explain how each policy influences aggregate demand or aggregate supply and its likely impact on different types of unemployment.
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of policies using criteria such as speed of impact, cost‑effectiveness, side effects and sustainability.
Materials Needed:
  • Projector and screen
  • Whiteboard and markers
  • Printed handout of the policy summary table
  • Worksheet with policy cards and evaluation criteria
  • Sticky notes and pens for the opening poll
  • Calculator (optional for quick multipliers)
Introduction:

Start with a quick poll: “What do you think causes people to be unemployed?” Connect responses to the previous lesson on unemployment types. Explain that today students will explore the range of government policies aimed at reducing unemployment and learn how to judge their effectiveness. Success will be shown by correctly matching policies to unemployment types and justifying their evaluation.

Lesson Structure:
  1. Do‑now (5') – Students write three reasons for unemployment on sticky notes and share briefly.
  2. Mini‑lecture (10') – Review demand‑side vs. supply‑side policies using slides and an AD‑AS diagram.
  3. Group activity (15') – Each group receives a policy card, identifies its objective, target unemployment type, and potential drawbacks; complete the worksheet.
  4. Whole‑class discussion (10') – Groups present findings; teacher highlights evaluation criteria (speed, cost‑effectiveness, side effects, sustainability).
  5. Case‑study analysis (10') – Students evaluate a mixed‑policy scenario, rank policies by speed and cost‑effectiveness.
  6. Check for understanding (5') – Quick Kahoot quiz on key concepts.
Conclusion:

Recap that demand‑side measures quickly lower cyclical unemployment while supply‑side reforms address structural issues over the longer term. For the exit ticket, pupils write one policy they would prioritize and justify their choice using the evaluation criteria. Homework: research a recent government unemployment policy in your country and write a short paragraph assessing its likely effectiveness.
