Lesson Plan
Grade: Date: 17/01/2026
Subject: Chemistry
Lesson Topic: Describe the differences between elements, compounds and mixtures
Learning Objective/s:
  • Describe key differences between elements, compounds and mixtures in terms of composition, formula and separation methods.
  • Explain why compounds exhibit properties distinct from their constituent elements.
  • Identify appropriate physical techniques for separating common mixtures.
  • Classify given substances as an element, compound or mixture and justify the classification.
  • Construct a Venn diagram that visually contrasts elements, compounds and mixtures.
Materials Needed:
  • Projector and digital slides
  • Whiteboard and markers
  • Printed comparison‑table handout
  • Venn‑diagram worksheet
  • Sample mixtures (sand & iron filings, salt solution, air‑filled balloon)
  • Kahoot/quiz platform or exit‑ticket slips
Introduction:

Begin with a quick question: “What everyday substances do you think are pure, and which are mixtures?” Connect this to prior knowledge that elements are pure substances made of one type of atom. Explain that by the end of the lesson students will be able to clearly differentiate elements, compounds and mixtures and justify their classifications.

Lesson Structure:
  1. Do‑Now (5’) – Students complete the “Quick Revision Checklist” on the board and submit answers.
  2. Mini‑lecture (10’) – Present definitions and the comparison table using slides; highlight composition, formulas and separation methods.
  3. Guided practice (15’) – In pairs, students classify a set of examples (e.g., O₂, H₂SO₄, air, brass) and discuss reasoning.
  4. Hands‑on activity (15’) – Small groups work with the sample mixtures, apply a physical separation technique, and fill in a Venn diagram worksheet.
  5. Check for understanding (5’) – Kahoot quiz or exit‑ticket: write one key difference between compounds and mixtures.
Conclusion:

Recap the three categories, emphasizing how composition and separation methods set them apart. Collect exit‑tickets to gauge understanding, and assign homework: complete a worksheet with additional classification and separation‑method questions.
