Lesson Topic: Write values into, and read values from, an array using iteration
Learning Objective/s:

  • Identify and correct common indexing errors such as out‑of‑bounds access.
  • Evaluate a simple program that stores and displays student marks.
Materials Needed:
  • Projector or interactive whiteboard
  • Computer lab with IDE or pseudocode editor
  • Printed worksheet with array exercises
  • Sample code snippets (slides)
  • Whiteboard and markers
 Introduction:
Begin with a quick question: How could we store the marks of an entire class in a single variable? Review that variables hold single values while arrays hold collections, and remind students of zero‑based indexing. Explain that by the end of the lesson they will be able to write to and read from an array using loops, which will be demonstrated through a marks‑entry program.
Lesson Structure:
  1. Do‑Now (5') – Students list examples of data that could be stored in arrays; share responses.
  2. Direct Instruction (10') – Teacher presents array concepts, declaration, indexing, and loop syntax using projected slides.
  3. Guided Practice (15') – Whole class walks through the step‑by‑step procedure to fill an array with multiples of 3, writing pseudocode together.
  4. Pair Programming (15') – Students use the IDE to implement a program that asks for 5 student marks, stores them in an array, then displays them; teacher circulates to check understanding.
  5. Common Pitfalls Review (5') – Highlight out‑of‑bounds errors and the need to reset loop counters; students spot errors in a faulty snippet.
  6. Check for Understanding (5') – Quick exit quiz (Kahoot/handout) with three questions on writing and reading array elements.
Conclusion:
Summarise that arrays allow grouped data and that loops provide an efficient way to populate and retrieve those values. Ask a few students to verbally explain the write and read loops they used. Collect an exit ticket where each learner writes one correct array statement and one common mistake to avoid. Assign homework to modify the marks program to calculate and display the class average.
