Lesson Plan
Grade: Date: 17/01/2026
Subject: Music
Lesson Topic: Demonstrate control of technique and expression in performance.
Learning Objective/s:
  • Apply accurate pitch, rhythm, articulation and dynamics when performing a piece.
  • Demonstrate expressive phrasing, tempo modulation and tone colour to convey musical intent.
  • Exhibit confident stage presence through proper posture, breath control, eye contact and movement.
  • Analyse the composer’s style and create personal interpretive notes for performance.
Materials Needed:
  • Instrument and sheet music for the selected piece
  • Electronic tuner and metronome
  • Projector or screen for displaying expressive markings
  • Handout of common expressive symbols and practical tips
  • Mirror or video device for stage‑presence review
  • Stage‑presence checklist (posture, eye contact, facial expression, movement)
Introduction:

Begin with a short audio clip of a highly expressive performance and ask students what makes it compelling. Remind them that they already know basic pitch, rhythm and dynamics from previous lessons. Explain that today they will refine technique and add purposeful expression, with success measured by a completed stage‑presence checklist and a short performance recording.

Lesson Structure:
  1. Do‑now (5'): Quick pitch‑and‑rhythm warm‑up using tuner and metronome.
  2. Mini‑lecture (10'): Review expressive markings (p, mf, legato, staccato, rit., accel.) with practical tips displayed on the projector.
  3. Technical drill (15'): Slow practice of difficult passages, counting aloud and using beat subdivision.
  4. Dynamic shaping activity (10'): Play a selected phrase at varying dynamics (p, mf, f) and note changes in tone colour.
  5. Stage‑presence practice (10'): Students rehearse standing, using the mirror/video to check posture, eye contact and gestures; complete the checklist.
  6. Performance simulation (10'): Record a short run‑through of the piece, then peer‑review using the assessment criteria.
Conclusion:

Recap how accurate technique, expressive control and confident stage presence combine to create a compelling performance. For the exit ticket, each student writes one personal interpretive note they will apply in their next practice. Homework: follow the 30‑minute practice routine at home, record the final run‑through, and bring the video for the next class.
