Subject: Business Studies
Lesson Topic: advantages and disadvantages of primary market research methods
Learning Objective/s:
  • Describe the main primary market research methods and their purposes.
  • Analyse the advantages and disadvantages of each primary research method.
  • Compare and select appropriate primary research techniques for a given business scenario.
  • Evaluate how methodological choices affect data quality and decision‑making.
Materials Needed:
  • Projector and screen
  • Whiteboard and markers
  • Printed handouts of method comparison table
  • Sample questionnaire templates
  • Laptop with internet access for online survey demo
  • Sticky notes for focus‑group activity
Introduction:
Begin with a quick poll: ask students how they gather information when choosing a new product. Link this to the concept of primary market research and recall previous lessons on secondary data. Explain that by the end of the lesson they will be able to identify and evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of different primary research methods.
Lesson Structure:
  1. Do‑now (5') – Students complete a short Kahoot quiz on types of market research.
  2. Teacher mini‑lecture (10') – Define primary research and overview of five methods, using slides.
  3. Group activity (15') – Teams analyse a case study, matching each method to its advantages/disadvantages on a worksheet.
  4. Whole‑class discussion (10') – Groups present findings; teacher clarifies misconceptions and highlights bias issues.
  5. Application exercise (10') – Students design a brief primary research plan for a product idea, stating chosen method and justification.
Conclusion:
Summarise that each primary method offers a trade‑off between cost, depth and reliability. Ask each pupil to write one key advantage and one key disadvantage of their chosen method on an exit ticket. Assign homework to draft a questionnaire for a real‑world product scenario.
