Grade: Date: 17/01/2026
Subject: Economics
Lesson Topic: Causes of changes in globalisation: movement of multinational companies (MNCs)
Learning Objective/s:
  • Describe the main motives that drive MNCs to relocate internationally (market‑seeking, resource‑seeking, efficiency‑seeking, strategic‑seeking).
  • Analyse push and pull factors influencing MNC location decisions.
  • Explain how MNC movement contributes to changes in globalisation, including FDI, technology transfer and supply‑chain formation.
  • Evaluate the benefits and challenges that host countries experience from MNC presence.
  • Apply the decision‑making flowchart to a real‑world example of an MNC entering a new market.
Materials Needed:
  • Projector or interactive whiteboard
  • Slide deck summarising motives, push/pull factors and recent FDI data
  • Handout with the push‑pull table and a blank flow‑chart
  • Markers and flip‑chart paper for group brainstorming
  • Short case‑study cards of specific MNCs (e.g., Toyota, Unilever)
Introduction:

Begin with a quick poll: “Which global brands do you see in your daily life?” Link responses to the idea that many of these brands are run by multinational companies. Remind students that globalisation is shaped not only by trade policies but also by where MNCs choose to locate. Today they will identify why MNCs move and how that reshapes global integration, with success measured by their ability to complete a flow‑chart analysis.

Lesson Structure:
  1. Do‑now (5’) – Students list three multinational brands they know and discuss in pairs why these firms operate in many countries. Teacher records ideas.
  2. Mini‑lecture (10’) – Present definitions of MNCs, the four motives and the push‑pull framework using slides and the recent FDI table.
  3. Guided analysis (12’) – In small groups, students fill in a push‑pull matrix for a given MNC case study and share findings.
  4. Flow‑chart activity (10’) – Groups use the suggested diagram to map the decision‑making process for their MNC, justifying each step.
  5. Whole‑class discussion (8’) – Compare groups’ charts, highlighting how MNC movement drives globalisation trends.
  6. Check for understanding (5’) – Quick quiz (Kahoot or handout) with 3‑4 questions on motives and impacts.
  7. Reflection & exit ticket (5’) – Learners write one benefit and one challenge of MNC presence in a host country.
Conclusion:

Summarise that MNCs relocate to capture markets, resources and efficiencies, driving deeper global integration while creating both opportunities and risks for host nations. For the exit ticket, learners note one benefit and one challenge of MNC presence. Homework: research a recent MNC expansion (2022‑2024) and write a short paragraph linking it to the motives discussed.
