Subject: Business Studies
Lesson Topic: advantages and disadvantages of different types of business organisation
Learning Objective/s:
  • Describe the key characteristics of each main type of business organisation (sole trader, partnership, private limited, public limited, co‑operative).
  • Compare the advantages and disadvantages of these forms in terms of liability, control, access to finance and continuity.
  • Evaluate which type of organisation is most suitable for a given business scenario.
Materials Needed:
  • Projector and screen
  • Whiteboard and markers
  • Printed summary handout of business types
  • Comparative summary worksheet
  • Sticky notes for group activity
  • Laptop with presentation slides
Introduction:
Begin with a quick poll: “If you were starting a business today, which structure would you choose and why?” Connect to prior learning on profit and risk, then state that by the end of the lesson students will be able to list and compare the main business organisations and justify the most appropriate form for a case study.
Lesson Structure:
  1. Do‑now (5’) – Students write their poll responses on sticky notes and share briefly.
  2. Mini‑lecture (10’) – Teacher presents an overview of the five business types using slides.
  3. Guided analysis (12’) – Pairs complete a T‑chart of advantages/disadvantages for each type (handout).
  4. Whole‑class comparison (8’) – Display the comparative summary table; discuss key differences.
  5. Application activity (10’) – Small groups evaluate a case scenario, recommend the optimal business form and record justification.
  6. Check for understanding (5’) – Quick quiz/exit ticket on the main pros and cons of each organisation.
Conclusion:
Summarise the main pros and cons of each organisation and highlight how the choice impacts liability and growth. Students complete an exit ticket stating which structure they would choose for the case and why. Homework: research a real‑world company, identify its business form, and prepare a brief justification.
