Lesson Plan
Grade: Date: 25/02/2026
Subject: Information Communication Technology ICT
Lesson Topic: Know and understand characteristics, uses, advantages and disadvantages of the research methods of observation, interviews, questionnaires and examination of existing documents
Learning Objective/s:
  • Describe the characteristics, uses, advantages and disadvantages of observation, interviews, questionnaires and document examination.
  • Compare the strengths and limitations of each research method for system analysis.
  • Select appropriate research method(s) based on project requirements, resources and stakeholder considerations.
  • Apply a decision‑making checklist to choose methods for a given ICT project.
Materials Needed:
  • Projector and screen
  • Whiteboard and markers
  • Printed handouts of method comparison tables
  • Sample questionnaire and interview guide
  • Laptop with internet access for online survey demo
  • Sticky notes for observation activity
Introduction:
Begin with a quick video clip showing a user interacting with a computer system, prompting students to notice what information can be gathered simply by watching. Ask learners to recall any research they have done in other subjects and how they collected data. Explain that today they will master four core research methods and will be able to justify which to use in a systems development project.
Lesson Structure:
  1. Do‑now (5'): Students write down three ways they could find out how a new app is used and share briefly. (Engage)
  2. Mini‑lecture (10'): Overview of observation – characteristics, uses, pros/cons, with slide and real‑world example. (Explain)
  3. Paired observation activity (10'): In the classroom, pairs observe a peer performing a simple task and record observations on a worksheet. (Explore)
  4. Interview & questionnaire demo (12'): Role‑play an interview and complete a short questionnaire; discuss strengths/weaknesses. (Demonstrate)
  5. Document analysis task (8'): Groups examine a sample system specification, identify useful data and note limitations. (Apply)
  6. Method selection checklist (10'): Whole‑class discussion using the four‑step checklist to choose methods for a given scenario; students record their choice on an exit ticket. (Evaluate)
Conclusion:
Summarise the key features of each method and how they complement one another in the systems life cycle. Have students complete an exit ticket stating which method they would use for a chosen project and why. Assign homework to design a brief research plan for a personal ICT project, selecting at least two methods.
