Grade: Date: 25/02/2026
Subject: Information Communication Technology ICT
Lesson Topic: Know and understand advantages and disadvantages of using computer controlled systems rather than humans
Learning Objective/s:
  • Describe the advantages and disadvantages of computer‑controlled systems across six ICT applications.
  • Compare computer‑controlled systems with human‑performed tasks using criteria such as speed, cost, safety and ethical impact.
  • Evaluate when it is appropriate to adopt computer control and justify decisions with real‑world examples.
  • Analyse the ethical and social implications (e.g., employment, privacy) of automation.
Materials Needed:
  • Projector and screen
  • Whiteboard and markers
  • Printed summary‑table handouts
  • Laptop with internet access for interactive slides
  • Worksheet with case‑study scenarios
  • Sticky notes for group brainstorming
Introduction:
Begin with a quick video clip showing a robotic arm assembling a car and a traffic‑light controller in action. Ask students to share where they have seen computers replace human work and note their ideas on the board. Explain that today they will investigate the benefits and drawbacks of such systems and that they will be able to list at least three advantages and three disadvantages for each application by the end of the lesson.
Lesson Structure:
  1. Do‑now (5'): Students write examples of tasks now performed by computers on sticky notes and share briefly.
  2. Mini‑lecture (10'): Teacher presents the six ICT applications with slides, highlighting key advantages and disadvantages using the summary table.
  3. Guided analysis (15'): In pairs, students complete a two‑column chart (pros/cons) for one assigned application and present their findings.
  4. Whole‑class comparison (10'): Consolidate the six charts on the board, discussing patterns, cost vs. speed, and ethical issues.
  5. Ethical debate (10'): Groups argue for or against increased automation in a chosen application, considering employment and privacy.
  6. Exit ticket (5'): Each student writes one situation where computer control is preferable and one where human control is better.
Conclusion:
Summarise that computer‑controlled systems can boost speed, precision and safety but may raise costs, inflexibility and social concerns. Remind students to complete the homework worksheet comparing two applications of their choice. Collect exit tickets as a quick check of understanding.
