Grade: Date: 17/01/2026
Subject: English as a Second Language
Lesson Topic: produce coherent and relevant responses
Learning Objective/s:
  • Identify key features of a coherent spoken response.
  • Organise spoken answers with a clear introduction, development, and conclusion.
  • Use appropriate linking expressions to connect ideas.
  • Demonstrate relevance by answering all parts of the prompt.
  • Manage timing and fluency to meet the 1‑2 minute requirement.
Materials Needed:
  • Projector or interactive whiteboard
  • Sample picture prompts (printed or digital)
  • Audio recorder or smartphone for self‑recording
  • Speaking checklist handout
  • Timer/stopwatch
  • List of linking expressions handout
Introduction:

Begin with a quick discussion: “What makes a spoken answer sound organised and on‑topic?” Invite students to share any previous speaking practice experiences. Explain that today they will learn a step‑by‑step strategy to produce coherent, relevant responses and will use a checklist to verify their performance.

Lesson Structure:
  1. Do‑now (5’) – Students view a picture on the board, note three observations, and share briefly.
  2. Mini‑lecture (10’) – Present the key features of a coherent response and a range of linking expressions using slides.
  3. Guided planning (8’) – Model reading a prompt, underlining keywords, and creating a three‑point outline.
  4. Paired practice (12’) – Role‑play: one student reads a prompt, the other speaks for 90 seconds following the outline; then switch.
  5. Recording & feedback (10’) – Students record their response, exchange recordings, and complete the self‑assessment checklist.
  6. Whole‑class debrief (5’) – Highlight common pitfalls and strategies to avoid them.
  7. Exit ticket (5’) – Write one personal action step for the next speaking task.
Conclusion:

Review the seven‑step process and remind students that the checklist will help them stay on topic and use linking language. Collect the exit tickets and note any recurring issues for the next lesson. For homework, students choose a picture from a magazine, plan and record a 90‑second description, and bring the audio for peer feedback.
