Lesson Topic: advantages and disadvantages of different methods of communication
Learning Objective/s:
  • Describe why effective communication is vital for business operations.
  • Compare the advantages and disadvantages of at least five communication methods.
  • Evaluate which method best suits a given business scenario based on purpose, audience and urgency.
  • Create a brief decision‑making flowchart for selecting an appropriate communication method.
Materials Needed:
  • Projector and screen
  • Whiteboard and markers
  • Printed worksheet with communication‑method table
  • Laptops/tablets for research
  • Exit‑ticket slips
  • Flowchart template handout
Introduction:

Start with the scenario: a product launch is delayed because a crucial email was missed. Ask students how different ways of communicating could have prevented the problem. Review that they already know basic business communication and state that by the end of the lesson they will be able to list pros and cons of each method and choose the most appropriate one.

Lesson Structure:
  1. Do‑now (5'): Quick quiz on common business communication terms.
  2. Mini‑lecture (10'): Slides summarising each method’s strengths and weaknesses.
  3. Group activity (15'): Analyse case studies, fill in a comparison table, and discuss findings.
  4. Whole‑class debrief (10'): Groups share key advantages/disadvantages and justify choices.
  5. Individual task (10'): Design a decision‑making flowchart using the provided template.
  6. Exit ticket (5'): Write one method you would use for a given scenario and why.
Conclusion:

Recap the main factors that influence the choice of communication method. Collect exit tickets to gauge understanding and assign homework: research a newly emerging communication tool and write a short paragraph evaluating its potential advantages and disadvantages for business use.
