Lesson Plan
Grade: Date: 25/02/2026
Subject: English Language
Lesson Topic: Analyse the ways in which writers’ and speakers’ choices of form, structure and language produce meaning and style
Learning Objective/s:
  • Identify and describe the form, structure and language features of a given text.
  • Analyse how each choice contributes to meaning and stylistic effect.
  • Evaluate the interaction between form, structure and language in producing overall impact.
  • Use appropriate terminology and textual evidence to support analysis.
  • Construct a coherent, well‑structured response to exam prompts.
Materials Needed:
  • Projector and screen
  • Printed excerpts (e.g., descriptive passage)
  • Whiteboard and markers
  • Handout with analysis checklist and terminology list
  • Highlighters for annotating texts
  • Laptop with presentation slides
Introduction:
Begin with a quick visual of a striking opening line projected on screen, asking students what expectations the form creates. Recall previous work on identifying genre conventions and structural markers. Explain that today they will learn a step‑by‑step approach to link form, structure and language to meaning, and that success will be measured by a clear, evidence‑based analysis in the practice task.
Lesson Structure:
  1. Do‑now (5'): Students read the projected excerpt and jot initial impressions of form and tone; teacher checks a few responses.
  2. Mini‑lecture (10'): Review definitions of form, structure, language with examples; highlight key terminology.
  3. Guided analysis (15'): Whole‑class mapping of the excerpt’s macro‑structure and micro‑structure on the board, noting signposting and sentence patterns.
  4. Language deep dive (10'): Small groups annotate the text for lexis, rhetorical devices, syntax, and visual layout; share findings.
  5. Integration activity (15'): Pairs write a short paragraph explaining how the identified choices interact to produce meaning and style, using the checklist.
  6. Marking practice (5'): Students exchange paragraphs, apply the checklist, and give peer feedback.
Conclusion:
Summarise how form, structure and language work together to shape meaning, referencing the examples generated. Students complete an exit ticket by writing one concise claim about the excerpt’s style. Assign homework to analyse a different text using the same framework.
