| Lesson Topic: Be able to set display format of Boolean/logical field (yes/no, true/false, checkbox) |
Learning Objective/s:
- Describe the purpose of display formats for Boolean fields in a database.
- Identify the three common display options (Yes/No, True/False, Checkbox) and appropriate use‑cases.
- Apply the step‑by‑step procedure to change a Boolean field’s display format in a desktop DBMS.
- Demonstrate the effect by creating a table and setting the field to a checkbox format.
- Evaluate common mistakes when altering display formats and how to avoid them.
|
Materials Needed:
- Computer lab with Microsoft Access (or equivalent DBMS) installed.
- Projector and screen for teacher demonstration.
- Sample database file “Students.accdb”.
- Worksheet containing practice instructions and space for reflection.
- Printed handout summarising display format options.
- Whiteboard and markers.
|
Introduction:
Begin with a quick question: “When you see a tick box in a form, what data is actually being stored?” Review that Boolean fields store only two values and that the way they appear can be changed. Explain that today students will learn how to set those display formats and will be able to show the result in a live table.
|
Lesson Structure:
- Do‑Now (5'): Students answer a short quiz on Boolean values and typical display forms.
- Teacher Demonstration (10'): Open Access, locate a Boolean field, switch to Design View, change the Display Control to “Checkbox”, save and show the result in Datasheet view.
- Guided Practice (15'): Students create a “Tasks” table, add a “Completed” Yes/No field, set its display format to Checkbox, and enter five records.
- Peer Check (5'): Pairs exchange screens, verify that the checkbox reflects the stored values, and discuss any discrepancies.
- Class Reflection (5'): Discuss common mistakes (e.g., mismatched underlying values) and when each display format is most appropriate.
|
Conclusion:
Recap the three display options and the steps required to modify them. Students complete an exit ticket by writing one scenario where a checkbox is preferable to Yes/No text. For homework, they will modify a field in a personal database to a different format and note any impact on data entry.
