Lesson Plan
Grade: Year 10 Date: 17/01/2026
Subject: Business Studies
Lesson Topic: advantages and disadvantages of different extension strategies
Learning Objective/s:
  • Describe the three main product‑extension strategies (line, brand, product‑mix) and their sub‑categories.
  • Analyse the advantages and disadvantages of each extension type.
  • Evaluate which extension strategy best fits a given business scenario.
  • Apply decision‑making criteria to recommend an appropriate extension for a case study.
Materials Needed:
  • Projector and screen
  • Whiteboard and markers
  • Printed worksheet with extension‑strategy tables
  • Sample product packaging images (line, brand, etc.)
  • Laptop with presentation slides
  • Sticky notes for group activity
Introduction:
Begin with a quick poll: “What new product versions have you bought recently?” Connect responses to brand familiarity and ask students to consider why companies launch such versions. State that by the end of the lesson they will be able to compare extension strategies and decide which is most suitable for a given business.
Lesson Structure:
  1. Do‑now (5'): Students list recent product extensions they have encountered on a sticky note.
  2. Mini‑lecture (15'): Teacher presents the five extension types with a flow‑chart diagram and real‑world examples.
  3. Guided analysis (15'): In pairs, learners complete a worksheet comparing advantages and disadvantages for each strategy using a provided case study.
  4. Whole‑class discussion (10'): Groups share key points; teacher highlights common themes and misconceptions.
  5. Decision‑making activity (10'): Each group selects the most appropriate extension for the case, justifies their choice using the criteria, and records it on the board.
Conclusion:
Recap the four extension types and their main pros and cons, emphasizing the decision‑making checklist. Students complete an exit ticket by writing which strategy they would recommend for a new product idea and why. Assign homework: research a recent brand extension and prepare a brief analysis for the next class.
