Subject: Business Studies
Lesson Topic: reasons for communication barriers
Learning Objective/s:
  • Identify common types of communication barriers in business.
  • Explain the underlying reasons why each barrier arises.
  • Analyse real‑world examples to illustrate the impact of barriers.
  • Propose practical strategies to reduce or eliminate communication barriers.
Materials Needed:
  • Projector and screen
  • Whiteboard and markers
  • Handout with barrier table
  • Sample email and memo excerpts
  • Short video clip on cultural communication
  • Sticky notes for group activity
Introduction:
Begin with a quick poll: how many students have missed important information because of noise or unclear language? Recall previous lessons on effective communication and the role of clear messaging. Today students will identify why barriers occur and evaluate how they affect business decisions.
Lesson Structure:
  1. Do‑now (5'): Students write one personal experience of a missed message and share briefly. (Check understanding)
  2. Mini‑lecture (10'): Define communication barrier and review five main types using the projector. (Direct instruction)
  3. Guided analysis (12'): In pairs, match each listed reason to a barrier type on the handout. (Collaborative)
  4. Case study discussion (10'): Review four business examples; discuss impact and underlying reasons. (Whole class)
  5. Strategy brainstorm (8'): Groups create an action plan to overcome a selected barrier and record ideas on sticky notes. (Application)
  6. Exit ticket (5'): Write one key reason for barriers and one strategy to address it. (Formative assessment)
Conclusion:
Summarise that barriers stem from physical, psychological, semantic, organisational and cultural factors, and that awareness enables mitigation. Collect exit tickets to gauge understanding. For homework, ask students to observe a real workplace communication, note any barrier they notice, and prepare a short reflection for the next lesson.
