Grade: Date: 17/01/2026
Subject: Computer Science
Lesson Topic: Understand the difference between the internet and the world wide web
Learning Objective/s:
  • Describe the Internet as a global network infrastructure.
  • Explain how the World Wide Web operates as a service on top of the Internet.
  • Compare and contrast the Internet and the Web using key characteristics.
  • Identify the layers of the TCP/IP model relevant to web communication.
  • Recognise common misconceptions about the Internet and the Web.
Materials Needed:
  • Projector or interactive whiteboard
  • Slides/PowerPoint summarising definitions and layers
  • Handout with comparison table
  • Short video clip illustrating data flow on the Internet
  • Laptops/tablets for students to explore a website and view network info
  • Sticky notes for quick exit ticket
Introduction:

Begin with a quick poll: raise your hand if you think the Internet and the Web are the same thing. Review that students already know the Internet connects devices, while the Web delivers web pages. Explain that today’s success criteria are to define each, illustrate how they interact, and spot common misconceptions.

Lesson Structure:
  1. Do‑now (5’) – Students write on a sticky note: “What is the Internet?” and “What is the Web?” to reveal preconceptions.
  2. Mini‑lecture (10’) – Present definitions, the TCP/IP layered model, and show how the Web sits in the Application layer using slides.
  3. Interactive diagram (8’) – Display the suggested layered diagram; students label parts on printed handouts.
  4. Comparison activity (10’) – In pairs, fill a Venn diagram comparing the Internet vs. the Web using source information.
  5. Misconception check (5’) – Teacher reads common misconceptions; students vote true/false with clickers or hand signals.
  6. Consolidation quiz (7’) – Short Kahoot or exit‑ticket quiz with three questions covering the objectives.
Conclusion:

Summarise that the Internet is the underlying network while the Web is one of many services that run on it. Ask students to write one key difference on an exit ticket. Assign homework: research another Internet service (e.g., email or VoIP) and prepare a brief description of how it uses the same layers.
