Grade: Date: 17/01/2026
Subject: Business Studies
Lesson Topic: recommend and justify which method of advertising to use in a given situation
Learning Objective/s:
  • Describe the key factors influencing the choice of an advertising medium.
  • Analyse a business scenario to identify suitable advertising options.
  • Apply a decision‑matrix to compare at least two media and calculate weighted scores.
  • Justify the selected advertising method by linking it to the identified criteria.
Materials Needed:
  • Projector and screen
  • Whiteboard and markers
  • Printed decision‑matrix worksheets
  • Sample case study handouts
  • Laptops or tablets for research
  • Sticky notes and pens for group brainstorming
Introduction:
Begin with a short video clip showing contrasting ads for the same product, then ask students which would work best for different audiences. Review the four Ps, focusing on promotion and the role of advertising. Explain that by the end of the lesson they will be able to recommend and justify an advertising method using a decision matrix.
Lesson Structure:
  1. Do‑now (5'): Students list three advertising media they encounter daily.
  2. Mini‑lecture (10'): Overview of advertising media, target‑market factors and the decision‑matrix process.
  3. Guided analysis (15'): Teacher models analysing Situation 1 (energy drink) and fills a decision matrix on the board.
  4. Group activity (20'): Teams receive a new scenario (solar charger) and complete a decision‑matrix worksheet, comparing two media.
  5. Presentations (10'): Each group presents its recommendation and justification; peers use a checklist to give feedback.
  6. Plenary (5'): Whole‑class summarises the key criteria and links them to the chosen media.
Conclusion:
Summarise how the chosen advertising method should align with target market, budget and message complexity. For the exit ticket, pupils write one justification point for their group's recommendation. Homework: complete a decision‑matrix for a product of their choice and prepare a short justification paragraph.
