Grade: Date: 01/12/2025
Subject: Information Communication Technology ICT
Lesson Topic: Be able to create, modify, update and apply styles to ensure consistency of presentation
Learning Objective/s:
  • Describe what a style is and differentiate between character, paragraph, table, list, and cell styles.
  • Explain why using styles ensures consistency and efficiency in document formatting.
  • Apply the process to create, modify, update, and apply styles in a word processor.
  • Demonstrate how to use the style gallery and update styles from selected text.
  • Evaluate the impact of style changes on a document’s overall appearance.
Materials Needed:
  • Computer with word‑processing software (e.g., Microsoft Word or LibreOffice Writer)
  • Projector or interactive whiteboard
  • Sample document template for a report
  • Handout summarising style types and terminology
  • Worksheet with step‑by‑step tasks for creating and modifying styles
  • Internet access for video demo (optional)
Introduction:
Begin with a quick visual of two identical reports—one formatted manually and one using styles—to highlight inconsistencies. Ask students to recall how they previously formatted headings and tables. Explain that today they will learn how to use styles to achieve a consistent, professional look, and that they will be able to create, modify, update, and apply styles by the end of the lesson.
Lesson Structure:
  1. Do‑now (5'): Students compare two printed pages and list formatting differences. (Check understanding)
  2. Mini‑lecture & demo (10'): Define styles, show style types, demonstrate creating a new paragraph style. (Teacher‑led)
  3. Guided practice (15'): Students follow a worksheet to create three paragraph styles and a table style in the sample template. (Teacher circulates)
  4. Modifying & updating styles (10'): Demonstrate modifying a style and using “Update to Match Selection”; students repeat on their documents. (Hands‑on)
  5. Applying styles & hierarchy (10'): Students apply character and list styles, discuss inheritance effects. (Collaborative)
  6. Quick check (5'): Exit ticket – write one advantage of using styles and one scenario where updating a style is useful. (Formative)
Conclusion:
Summarise that styles provide a fast way to maintain consistency and allow global changes. Review the key steps of creating, modifying, updating, and applying styles. Collect exit tickets and assign homework to format a one‑page flyer using at least three different styles.
