Lesson Plan
Grade: Date: 17/01/2026
Subject: Geography
Lesson Topic: Governance: global agreements, mitigation and adaptation strategies, case studies
Learning Objective/s:

  • Describe the main international climate agreements (UNFCCC, Kyoto, Paris, Glasgow) and their legal status.
  • Explain how mitigation and adaptation strategies are linked to governance mechanisms.
  • Analyse case studies (EU, Bangladesh, Kenya) to illustrate how global commitments are implemented locally.
  • Evaluate the role of financial and institutional tools (ETS, GCF, REDD+) in supporting climate action.
Materials Needed:

  • Projector and laptop for presentation
  • Printed handout of the international agreements table
  • Case‑study worksheets (EU, Bangladesh, Kenya)
  • Sticky notes or index cards for strategy matching activity
  • Whiteboard and markers
  • Kahoot/Quizizz access for exit quiz
Introduction:

Begin with a quick poll: “Which global climate agreement have you heard of?” Connect students’ prior knowledge of recent news about COP26 to the lesson. State that by the end of the session they will be able to identify key agreements, explain mitigation‑adaptation links, and apply these concepts to real‑world case studies.

Lesson Structure:

  1. Do‑now (5’) – KWL chart on climate governance; students write what they know.
  2. Mini‑lecture (15’) – Overview of UNFCCC framework and the four major agreements, using the printed table.
  3. Interactive matching activity (10’) – In pairs, match each agreement to its legal status, target, and key feature.
  4. Strategy gallery walk (15’) – Stations with cards on mitigation and adaptation measures; groups rotate, note examples.
  5. Case‑study analysis (15’) – Small groups examine one of the three case studies, answer guiding questions, then share insights.
  6. Check for understanding (5’) – Kahoot quiz covering objectives.
Conclusion:

Recap the link between global agreements and on‑the‑ground actions, highlighting the diversity of strategies across the case studies. Students complete an exit ticket: “One thing I learned about how governance shapes climate action.” Assign homework to read a short article on the latest NDC updates and prepare a one‑paragraph reflection.
