Lesson Topic: Know and understand characteristics and uses of computers in the retail industry including point of sale (POS) terminals and electronic funds transfer at point of sale (EFTPOS) terminals

  • Describe the key characteristics and functions of POS and EFTPOS terminals in a retail setting.
  • Explain how POS systems integrate with inventory, sales reporting, and payment processing.
  • Evaluate the advantages and challenges of implementing POS/EFTPOS solutions.
  • Apply basic security and compliance concepts (e.g., PCI‑DSS, encryption) to retail payment systems.

  • POS software demo (simulated checkout)
  • EFTPOS terminal mock‑up or video demonstration
  • Barcode scanner and sample product labels

 Introduction:

Begin with a short video of a busy checkout line that speeds up when a POS system is used. Ask students to share experiences of fast vs. slow checkout. Explain that today they will identify how computers power modern retail and what success looks like: being able to compare POS and EFTPOS features and discuss security needs.

  1. Do‑now (5’): Quick quiz on basic retail terms (cash register, barcode).
  2. Direct instruction (10’): Teacher presents key roles of computers in retail using slides.
  3. Demo (12’): Live walkthrough of POS software processing a sale, then linking to EFTPOS payment.
  4. Guided activity (15’): Students work in pairs with the worksheet to fill a comparison table of POS vs. EFTPOS characteristics.
  5. Think‑pair‑share (8’): Discuss advantages and challenges; groups list three benefits and two risks on sticky notes.
  6. Security focus (5’): Brief overview of PCI‑DSS and encryption, followed by a quick true/false check.
  7. Plenary (5’): Teacher summarizes key points; students submit an exit ticket stating one new thing they learned.
Conclusion:

Recap the main functions of POS and EFTPOS terminals and how they improve retail efficiency and security. Students complete an exit ticket answering: “What is one security measure essential for EFTPOS?” For homework, they research a real‑world retail chain’s POS system and prepare a short paragraph on its unique features.
