Subject: Information Communication Technology ICT
Lesson Topic: Be able to apply text enhancement including bold, underline, italic
Learning Objective/s:
  • Apply bold, underline and italic formatting using the toolbar.
  • Use keyboard shortcuts for each enhancement on both Windows and Mac.
  • Create and apply custom styles that incorporate text enhancements.
  • Identify common mistakes when applying enhancements and avoid them.
  • Evaluate the impact of over‑using enhancements on document readability.
Materials Needed:
  • Computer with word‑processing software (e.g., MS Word or Google Docs)
  • Projector or interactive whiteboard
  • Worksheet with practice sentences
  • Handout of keyboard shortcut chart
  • Access to the Styles pane in the software
Introduction:
Begin with a quick demonstration of a plain sentence that looks dull, asking students how they might make important words stand out.
Recall previous lessons on basic formatting tools and introduce today’s focus on bold, underline, and italic.
Explain that by the end of the lesson they will be able to apply these enhancements via toolbar, shortcuts, and custom styles, and will self‑check using a checklist.
Lesson Structure:
  1. Do‑now (5') – Display the sentence “The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog.” Students note which words could be emphasized.
  2. Mini‑lecture (10') – Explain bold, underline, italic concepts and show toolbar buttons; demonstrate each enhancement.
  3. Keyboard shortcut practice (10') – Students use Ctrl/Cmd + B, U, I to format highlighted words; teacher circulates and checks.
  4. Styles creation (10') – Guide students through opening the Styles pane, creating a “Key Phrase” style that combines bold and italic, then applying it.
  5. Independent practice (15') – Students complete the practical exercise worksheet, recording steps for each task.
  6. Check‑understanding (5') – Quick quiz using the summary checklist; peer review of work.
Conclusion:
Summarize the three ways to apply text enhancements and remind students of the checklist for correct usage.
Collect exit tickets where each pupil writes one shortcut and one tip for avoiding over‑use.
Assign homework to format a short paragraph in a personal document using both the toolbar and a custom style.
