Lesson Plan
Grade: Date: 01/12/2025
Subject: Information Communication Technology ICT
Lesson Topic: Know and understand characteristics, uses and purpose of technical and user documentation
Learning Objective/s:
  • Describe the key characteristics, uses and purposes of technical documentation.
  • Explain the key characteristics, uses and purposes of user documentation.
  • Compare technical and user documentation and select the appropriate type for each Systems Life Cycle stage.
  • Produce a brief documentation checklist for a chosen SLC phase.
  • Evaluate sample documentation for clarity and audience suitability.
Materials Needed:
  • Projector and screen
  • Whiteboard and markers
  • Printed handouts of technical specs and user‑manual excerpts
  • Sample system design diagrams and screenshots
  • Worksheets for the documentation checklist activity
  • Laptop with internet access for online documentation tools
Introduction:

Begin with a quick poll: “What documents have you used when learning a new app or device?” Connect responses to the Systems Life Cycle and highlight how proper documentation underpins every stage. State that by the end of the lesson students will be able to identify, compare and create effective technical and user documents.

Lesson Structure:
  1. Do‑now (5'): Students list types of documents they have encountered and share one example.
  2. Mini‑lecture (10'): Teacher presents characteristics, uses and purposes of technical vs. user documentation, linking each to SLC stages.
  3. Group comparison activity (15'): Small groups receive sample technical and user documents, fill a comparison chart, and discuss findings.
  4. Documentation creation task (10'): Each group drafts a short user‑guide excerpt (3‑5 steps) for a simple system feature, applying best‑practice guidelines.
  5. Plenary (5'): Groups display their drafts, highlighting key elements; teacher provides quick feedback.
  6. Exit ticket (5'): Individually write one key difference between the two document types and one tip for making documentation effective.
Conclusion:

Recap the importance of matching documentation to its audience and SLC stage. Collect exit tickets to gauge understanding and assign homework: create a technical or user document (choose one) for any stage of a system they are familiar with, applying the checklist discussed.
