Lesson Plan
Grade: Date: 01/12/2025
Subject: Information Communication Technology ICT
Lesson Topic: Know and understand the operation of removing/quarantining viruses using up to date software
Learning Objective/s:
  • Describe how computer viruses spread in networked environments.
  • Explain the key functions of antivirus/anti‑malware software.
  • Apply the step‑by‑step procedure to remove or quarantine a virus using up‑to‑date software.
  • Evaluate best practices for keeping antivirus solutions current and documenting incidents.
Materials Needed:
  • Projector and screen
  • Computer lab with internet‑connected PCs
  • Up‑to‑date antivirus software installed on each PC
  • Controlled sample infected file for demonstration
  • Worksheet with virus‑removal checklist
  • Whiteboard and markers
Introduction:
Begin with a quick poll: “What’s the most surprising way you’ve heard a virus spread?” Connect to prior knowledge of file sharing and email risks. Explain that by the end of the lesson students will be able to safely detect, quarantine, and remove viruses using current software and record the incident.
Lesson Structure:
  1. Do‑now (5’) – Students create a mind‑map of virus transmission methods in networks; teacher reviews key points.
  2. Mini‑lecture (10’) – Present the definition of a computer virus, how it spreads, and the core functions of antivirus software (real‑time scanning, signatures, heuristics, quarantine, updates).
  3. Live demonstration (15’) – Update the antivirus, run a full scan on a test PC, and show quarantine of a flagged file.
  4. Guided practice (15’) – In pairs, learners follow a printed checklist to repeat the update, scan, quarantine, and second‑scan steps on lab computers while the teacher circulates.
  5. Group discussion (10’) – Teams analyse how network features (centralised updates, shared drives) influence virus spread and protection; record one positive and one negative impact.
  6. Reflection & exit ticket (5’) – Each student writes one critical step they will always remember and one best‑practice tip for keeping software current.
Conclusion:
Recap the removal workflow and highlight the importance of regular updates and documentation. Collect exit tickets to gauge understanding and assign a short homework: research a recent ransomware outbreak and note how the antivirus response aligned with today’s steps.
