Grade: Date: 25/02/2026
Subject: Physics
Lesson Topic: Describe the advantages and disadvantages of each method in terms of renewability, availability, reliability, scale and environmental impact
Learning Objective/s:
  • Describe the advantages and disadvantages of each major energy source (fossil, nuclear, renewable) in terms of renewability, availability, reliability, scale and environmental impact.
  • Compare and evaluate energy sources to determine their suitability for different applications.
  • Analyse how the assessed factors influence national energy‑policy decisions.
Materials Needed:
  • Projector and screen
  • PowerPoint slides summarising each energy source
  • Printed handouts with comparison tables
  • Whiteboard and markers
  • Group worksheet for source evaluation
  • Calculators (optional)
Introduction:
Begin with a quick poll: which energy source do you think is the most sustainable? Review prior knowledge of basic energy concepts and state today’s success criteria – students will be able to list and evaluate the five key factors for each energy source.
Lesson Structure:
  1. Do‑now (5'): Students answer the poll on the board and share initial ideas.
  2. Mini‑lecture (15'): Teacher presents the five assessment criteria and gives an overview of each energy source using slides.
  3. Guided analysis (20'): In pairs, students complete a comparison chart for two assigned sources, discussing renewability, availability, reliability, scale and environmental impact.
  4. Whole‑class synthesis (10'): Groups present the key advantages and disadvantages they identified; teacher records a summary table on the board.
  5. Quick quiz (5'): Exit‑ticket activity with three statements to check understanding of the criteria.
  6. Homework briefing (5'): Assign a one‑page report comparing a chosen source to another, using the five factors.
Conclusion:
Recap the five criteria and how they shape the strengths and weaknesses of each energy source. Students complete an exit ticket matching a source to its most significant advantage, and are reminded to submit the comparative report for homework.
