Subject: Business Studies
Lesson Topic: importance of training to a business and to employees
Learning Objective/s:
  • Describe the benefits of training for businesses and employees.
  • Explain the different types of training and appropriate contexts for each.
  • Outline the five‑step training process and formulate measurable objectives.
  • Analyse how training improves productivity, quality, and compliance.
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of a training programme using suitable criteria.
Materials Needed:
  • Projector and screen
  • Whiteboard and markers
  • Printed handouts of the benefits table
  • Case‑study worksheets
  • Sticky notes for brainstorming
  • Laptop with internet access for video clip
Introduction:
Begin with a quick poll: ask students to name a skill they recently learned on the job. Connect this to the idea that systematic training boosts both employee performance and business success. Explain that today they will explore why training matters, the types available, and the steps to design an effective programme. Success will be measured by their ability to outline the training process and evaluate its impact.
Lesson Structure:
  1. Do‑now (5’) – Students write recent personal training experiences on sticky notes and share a few examples.
  2. Mini‑lecture (10’) – Define training and discuss benefits to business and employees using the summary table.
  3. Group activity (12’) – In small groups, analyse a case study, identify training needs, and produce a brief list.
  4. Guided practice (10’) – Walk through the five‑step training process, setting SMART objectives for the case.
  5. Evaluation design (8’) – Groups design a simple evaluation method (quiz, observation, KPI) and present.
  6. Recap & Q&A (5’) – Teacher summarises key points; students ask questions.
Conclusion:
Review the five steps of the training process and the key benefits for both business and staff. Students complete an exit ticket by writing one way they would improve a training programme in their own workplace. For homework, they research a real‑world company’s training initiative and prepare a short summary.
