Lesson Plan
Grade: Date: 17/01/2026
Subject: English Language
Lesson Topic: Read and demonstrate understanding of a wide variety of texts
Learning Objective/s:
  • Identify and explain key linguistic features (e.g., register, tone, modality, cohesion) in a range of texts.
  • Analyse how language and structural choices shape meaning and purpose.
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of texts for specific audiences and contexts.
  • Construct evidence‑based written responses using a clear paragraph structure.
Materials Needed:
  • Projector and screen
  • Printed excerpts (expository prose, poem, advertisement, media article)
  • Highlighters / annotating pens
  • Worksheet with guided questions
  • Whiteboard and markers
  • Laptops or tablets for digital annotation (optional)
Introduction:
Begin with a striking headline from a recent news article to spark curiosity about how language influences readers. Review the previous lesson’s focus on identifying linguistic features and outline today’s success criteria: locate features, analyse their impact, and evaluate effectiveness in written responses.
Lesson Structure:
  1. Do‑now (5'): Students skim a mixed‑genre handout and note predicted purposes.
  2. Mini‑lecture (10'): Review reading strategies (pre‑reading, annotating, question‑driven reading) with projector examples.
  3. Guided practice (15'): In pairs, annotate a newspaper excerpt, highlighting two linguistic features and discussing their effect.
  4. Comparative analysis (10'): Whole‑class compare the annotated excerpt with a poem, focusing on how different text types use similar features.
  5. Structured response writing (15'): Students write a short answer (8‑10 lines) identifying features and evaluating effectiveness using the TEEL format.
  6. Peer feedback (5'): Exchange responses, check for evidence and evaluation, give quick oral feedback.
Conclusion:
Recap how identifying language choices and evaluating their impact equips students to answer exam questions effectively. Students complete an exit ticket listing one new feature they will add to their revision bank. For homework, they annotate a chosen article at home and bring their notes for the next lesson.
