Learning Objective/s:
- Describe the main types of learning institutions in Chinese (e.g., 小学, 大学) and give their pinyin.
- Identify and name common places and people in a school using Chinese vocabulary and pinyin.
- Use typical classroom expressions correctly in spoken or written Chinese.
- Explain a personal favourite subject and reason for the choice in Mandarin.
- Interpret a short math problem dialogue and summarize the solution in Chinese.
|
Materials Needed:
- Projector and screen
- Whiteboard and markers
- Printed vocabulary handouts (institutions, places, people, subjects)
- Flashcards with Chinese characters, pinyin and English
- Audio clips of classroom phrases
- Worksheet with translation, matching and sentence‑building tasks
|
Introduction:
Begin with a quick poll: “What’s your favourite place in school?” to activate prior knowledge of school‑related vocabulary. Show a short video clip of a bustling Chinese school hallway to spark interest. Explain that by the end of the lesson students will be able to describe schools, people, places and common phrases in Mandarin, and demonstrate understanding through a short dialogue.
|
Lesson Structure:
- Do‑Now (5'): Students translate three English sentences about school locations onto a mini‑whiteboard; teacher checks for accuracy.
- Mini‑lecture with slides (10'): Present the five types of learning institutions and common subjects; include pinyin and pronunciation practice.
- Matching activity (10'): In pairs, students match flashcards of places and people to Chinese labels; circulate for oral correction.
- Role‑play stations (15'): Students rotate through three stations practicing classroom phrases (“请坐下”, “请举手”, etc.) with a peer acting as teacher.
- Guided practice (10'): Work through the sample math dialogue, highlighting key vocabulary and steps; students retell the solution in their own words.
- Exit ticket (5'): Write one new word learned, one phrase they can use, and a sentence about their favourite subject.
|
Conclusion:
Briefly recap the vocabulary groups (institutions, places, people, subjects) and the classroom expressions practiced. Collect exit tickets as a quick retrieval check. Assign homework: complete the translation worksheet and create three original “请…” sentences about different school locations.
