Lesson Plan
Grade: 10 Date: 25/02/2026
Subject: Chemistry
Lesson Topic: Name and draw the displayed formulae of: (a) methane and ethane (b) ethene (c) ethanol (d) ethanoic acid (e) the products of the reactions stated in sections 11.4-11.7
Learning Objective/s:
  • Identify and name the given organic compounds (methane, ethane, ethene, ethanol, ethanoic acid).
  • Draw correct structural formulas for each compound using appropriate bond representations.
  • Predict and write the products of the listed reactions from sections 11.4‑11.7.
  • Explain the naming conventions for alkanes, alkenes, alcohols and carboxylic acids.
  • Balance simple combustion and addition reactions involving the compounds.
Materials Needed:
  • Projector or interactive whiteboard
  • Printed worksheets with formulae and reaction tables
  • Molecular model kits (ball‑and‑stick)
  • Whiteboard and markers
  • Chemistry textbook (IGCSE 0620) for reference
Introduction:
Begin with a quick visual of common household substances (e.g., natural gas, ethanol) to spark interest. Review students' prior knowledge of molecular formulas and bond types. Explain that by the end of the lesson they will be able to name, draw, and predict reactions for a set of key organic compounds.
Lesson Structure:
  1. Do‑now (5') – Students write the molecular formula for methane, ethane, ethene from memory on a sticky note.
  2. Mini‑lecture (10') – Present naming rules and structural features for alkanes, alkenes, alcohols, acids using slides.
  3. Guided practice (15') – Whole‑class drawing of structural formulas for the five compounds; teacher models on board, students replicate in notebooks.
  4. Reaction review (10') – Show the reaction table (sections 11.4‑11.7); students match reactants to products in pairs.
  5. Independent practice (15') – Worksheet: draw structures, name compounds, balance a combustion equation, predict product of ethene + Br₂.
  6. Check for understanding (5') – Quick quiz via Kahoot or show of hands.
  7. Summary & exit ticket (5') – Students write one thing they learned and one question on a slip.
Conclusion:
Recap the key naming conventions and the main reaction outcomes covered today. Collect exit tickets to assess understanding and assign homework to complete the worksheet on balancing combustion equations. Remind students to review functional‑group priority for upcoming tests.
