Grade: Date: 17/01/2026
Subject: Music
Lesson Topic: Perform individually and/or in an ensemble.
Learning Objective/s:
  • Demonstrate accurate pitch, rhythm, dynamics, and articulation when performing solo or in an ensemble.
  • Apply effective rehearsal techniques (score analysis, metronome use, sectional practice) to improve technical proficiency.
  • Exhibit expressive musical interpretation, including phrasing, tempo choices, and dynamics.
  • Collaborate with peers by maintaining balance, blend, and following conductor cues during ensemble performance.
  • Present confidently on stage with appropriate posture, attire, and audience engagement.
Materials Needed:
  • Individual instruments or voice recording equipment
  • Music scores/parts for each student
  • Metronome and tuner
  • Music stands
  • Audio playback device for recordings
  • Projector or screen for visual examples
  • Performance checklist handout
  • Space for mock stage (chairs, podium)
Introduction:
Begin with a short video of a professional solo and ensemble performance to capture interest. Review students’ recent rehearsal experiences, reminding them of key technical and expressive elements. Explain that today’s success will be measured by accurate execution, expressive interpretation, and confident stage presence.
Lesson Structure:
  1. Warm‑up (5') – breathing, posture, and basic technical drills using a metronome.
  2. Score study & individual practice (10') – analyze the part, mark dynamics, and practice difficult passages slowly with a tuner.
  3. Sectional rehearsal (15') – small groups work on balance and ensemble cues, using a peer‑review checklist.
  4. Full ensemble run‑through (15') – conduct a simulated performance, focusing on ensemble interaction and stage presentation.
  5. Mock performance & feedback (10') – each student or group performs; peers and teacher provide targeted feedback using the assessment criteria.
  6. Reflection & goal setting (5') – students complete an exit ticket noting one strength and one area to improve; assign homework of focused practice with a metronome.
Conclusion:
Summarise how accurate technique, expressive phrasing, and ensemble coordination contributed to the mock performances. Students complete an exit ticket stating their personal performance goal for the next practice session. For homework, they rehearse their piece at least three times with a metronome, focusing on the identified improvement area.
